In today's SlideShare, know all that you should about UK's EU Referendum.
  1. 5 Things you should know about UK's EU Referendum

  2. What is the EU referendum? David Cameron won the 2015 general election on a pledge to hold an in-out vote on the UK's membership of the European Union no later than the end of 2017. The referendum will ask British voters this question: "Should the United Kingdom remain a member of the European Union or leave the European Union?" The crucial slip of paper voters will be faced with when deciding which way to vote has been published by the government.

  3. Mr. Cameron accepted a suggestion from the Electoral Commission in 2015 to change the responses from 'Yes/No' to 'Remain/Leave'. The referendum campaign has been preceded by the Prime Minister's negotiations which took place with European leaders in a bid to secure a better deal for Britain's relationship with the EU.

  4. Why is a referendum being held? Britain had a referendum in 1975 shortly after it had joined the EU, or the Common Market as it was then called. The country voted to stay in then but there have been growing calls, from the public and politicians, for another vote because, they argue, the EU has changed a lot over the past 40 years, with many more countries joining and the organisation extending its control over more aspects of daily lives. David Cameron initially resisted these calls but in 2013 he changed his mind.

  5. Why do they want the UK to leave? They believe Britain is being held back by the EU, which they say imposes too many rules on business and charges billions of pounds a year in membership fees for little in return. They also want Britain to take back full control of its borders and reduce the number of people coming here to work. One of the main principles of EU membership is "free movement", which means you don't need to get a visa to go and live in another EU country. They also object to the idea of "ever closer union" and any ultimate goal to create a "United States of Europe".

  6. Who can vote in the EU referendum? Anyone over the age of 18 who falls into one of the following groups can cast a vote:

    • British citizens resident in the UK
    • British citizens resident overseas for less than 15 years
    • Citizens of Ireland, Malta and Cyprus resident in the UK
    • Commonwealth citizens resident in the UK
    • Commonwealth citizens resident in Gibraltar

  7. Eligibility will be based on the criteria for voting in a general election, which means citizens of most EU countries (who can vote in local and European elections in Britain) will not be allowed to take part. However, citizens of Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man, which are not in the EU, will not take part. Members of the House of Lords will be allowed to vote, despite being ineligible to cast a ballot at general elections.

  8. When will an EU referendum be held? The referendum will be held on Thursday, 23rd June, 2016. The proposed ballot paper has already been published alongside other rules and regulations associated with the vote as part of draft legislation. The next step will see the rules laid before MPs in Parliament, who will then be asked to vote on the date of the referendum which has been recommended by Mr. Cameron.

  9. A referendum on Britain's membership of the European Union can be held now that David Cameron has completed his negotiation on the terms of the UK's ongoing membership with his counterparts in Europe. Mr. Cameron did have until the end of 2017 to hold the referendum and had previously pledged not to rush into the vote until he had secured a good deal.
